My first love is photography. My artwork has always incorporated nature. It has evolved to where I find beauty, patterns and shapes all around. I want to share what I see. Meditation is an important part of my work and it has allowed me to find deeper details in nature. On any one day I may seek out a favorite weed that grows in the cracks of a parking lot or I may admire the back of a redbud leaf while getting my car worked on or I may walk through a construction site looking to photograph heart shapes in the mud.
Just above the micro level is where I do some intense manipulation of different elements of nature I have collected and pressed. That’s how I begin to describe how I go about deconstructing flowers and leaves for my artwork. I’ve been expanding my skills with my favorites for three years. This Year’s favorites include Queen Anne’s Lace flowers and greenery, Redbud and Maple leaves (the more points the better) and what I call “curlies” from grapevine, squash vines, and even twisty wild onion greens. I love my natural inventory but I will incorporate spray paint or glitter or beads as I am moved by my craft. It certainly amazes me and I am grateful that every year my skills grow and my unique art becomes more refined.
At the root of my work are Discovery and Admiration. Simply handling an item, whether it be a flower, a leaf, or a seed pod, I find I can be drawn in a fresh new direction or inspired to create a new technique. In manipulating the natural element I find new ways of putting things together. To me, experimenting and being in the moment means mistakes are blessings. I am inspired by what I call deconstructing nature. I create butterflies out of carrot greens, dragonflies out of maple tree helicopters, and I find extraordinary beauty in weeds. I believe trimming flowers before pressing them exposes God’s geometry.
